Summer is here and that means vacations, barbecues, and fun in the sun. Because we spend more time outdoors that means protecting your skin is essential and more importantly, the products you use not only need to be outstanding, but also effective. The issues we face include—but are not limited to—hyperpigmentation, breakouts and fine lines. Here are six of our favorite products and treatments to keep your skin healthy all summer long.

Sunscreen

No anti-aging skincare routine is complete without a sunscreen. UVA and UVB rays cause damage that will effectively undo your efforts to reverse the visible signs of aging. Be sure to apply an SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen about a half hour before you go outside and reapply about every two hours (or more often if you get wet or sweaty). Also, don’t store your sunscreen in a hot place like your car’s glove compartment or trunk. The heat can spoil it and make it ineffective.

PCA Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45 is a Castellon Plastic Surgery Center and MedSpa favorite. It offers UVA/UVB protection and lightweight which is helpful for breakout-prone skin. It’s also fast-absorbing and contains ingredients such as caffeine and milk thistle for extra environmental protection1.

Compromised skin

The outer layer of the skin (epidermis) that we see is the part that gives skin its color and works like a barrier. Excessive sun exposure can damage this barrier and can cause two problems: 1) the skin can no longer hold onto moisture, causing dryness, flaking, itching, and redness; and 2) the skin can’t protect itself, making it more vulnerable to environmental toxins, harmful UV rays, bacteria, allergens, and harsh chemical ingredients found in personal care products.

Neocutis BIO-CREAM Bio-restorative Skin Cream powered by PSP is one product that can help repair compromised skin. This cream contains proteins and peptides that nourish naturally occurring human growth factors found in the skin, which are the key elements to stimulating collagen growth. This product also contains caffeine and hyaluronic acid, which helps to immediately plump up the skin after application.2

Sweaty breakouts

You may not even realize it, but everything from your beach towel to your tanning lotion can irritate your skin. The rise in temperatures can cause more than normal amounts of oil to be made by the skin. When that oil gets lodged in the pore and is coupled with dirt, sunscreen and bacteria, you have the perfect breeding ground for a pimple.

SkinCeuticals LHA Cleanser Gel is a targeted exfoliating cleanser formulated for skin prone to breakouts. The deep cleansing gel gently refines the appearance of congested pores and helps to reduce blemishes without drying the skin. It features a blend of salicylic acids to address breakouts and visible signs of aging, even exfoliation to unclog congested pores, removes excess oils and makeup, and is Paraben-, soap-, synthetic-fragrance-, dye- and alcohol-free. Great for any skip type. This cleanser also made it on New Beauty favorite list of cleansers.

Obagi CLENZIderm MD Pore Therapy is a facial toner that contains 2% salicylic acid that helps purifies pores and leaves your complexion completely clean. Exfoliating ingredients also remove dead skin cells that clog pores and prevent the complexion from properly healing. Using this toner after your cleanser will allow your acne treatment products to absorb more easily into the skin for improved results.4

Better Skin Science Overnight AlphaRet Cream is a new “dream” cream that contains non-irritating retinoid and glycolic acid. The retinoid reduces sun spots and wrinkles while the glycolic acid improves skin tone and texture with no skin irritation or chemical reaction. The active ingredients in the cream are slowly and gently released once it meets the water in your skin. Now that is a dream! Not only do we love it, Allure magazine honored it with its Best Breakthrough Beauty Award in 2016.5

Hyperpigmentation

The extent of sun damage depends largely on a person’s skin color and his or her history of long-term or intense sun exposure. Sun spots are the result of long-term exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Brownish type of patches usually appears on areas of the body most often exposed to the sun – especially the face, hands, and arms. Years of sun exposure can result in spotted hyperpigmentation, a condition marked by increased pigment production that results in patchy skin color or a blotchy complexion.

Obagi® Nu-Derm system fights aging at the cellular level. This skincare system contain hydroquinone, a skin-lightening ingredient that treats hyperpigmentation, melasma, dark spots, sun spots, freckles, and age spots. The complete skin care system includes:

For spot treatment, try PCA’s Intensive Pigment Eraser. PCA’s intensive pigment works as a triple-threat spot treatment for hyperpigmentation. Hydroquinone and retinol work together to lighten dark spots and encourage cell turnover. It’s patent delivery system reduces irritation and carries ingredients deeper into the skin for superior results.

Microneedling

Fractional microneedling is the most effective and modernized form of collagen induction therapy. It improves tone, texture, elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks. The needling pen uses fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of the skin to stimulate collagen production. It is virtually painless and incredibly effective. Castellon Plastic Surgery Center and MedSpa uses both electric microneedling pen and radiofrequency microneedling (Fractora).

“When choosing between an electric pen vs. radiofrequency microneedling, I take multiple factors into consideration, such as patient’s age, overall concerns and skin type.” explains Alexandra Moore, Aesthetician at Castellon Plastic Surgery Center and MedSpa. “I ask how much time they are willing to commit to a series of treatments and focus on the most cost-effective way to help them reach their individual goals.”

Hydrafacial

Admittedly, this is a personal favorite and most popular treatment in our practice. A HydraFacial can effectively treat hyperpigmentation of the skin and the early signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles) resulting from sun exposure. The amazing results are both instant and long-lasting. The treatment includes steps to cleanse and exfoliate the skin, as well as extractions for instantly decongested pores and even complexion. It hydrates the skin, restoring moisture and vitality to the epidermis, while providing antioxidant protection for skin health.
