If you have had your nipple and areola (the darker tissue surrounding the nipple bud) removed as part of your mastectomy, you may wish to have it reconstructed. This is the final stage of breast reconstruction surgery. Many women seek the skill and expertise of board-certified plastic surgeon Mauricio J. Castellon, MD, for breast and nipple reconstruction. At his practice, Castellon Plastic Surgery Center, Dr. Castellon offers breast reconstruction and other types of breast enhancement for women who live in Melbourne, Brevard County and the surrounding communities of Central Florida.
Nipple reconstruction involves the restoration of the nipple-areolar complex lost due to injury, breast cancer or other conditions. A variety of different techniques exist for reconstruction of the nipple and its surrounding areolar tissue.
These include the use of skin grafts taken from other regions of the body, local flaps of breast skin that are shaped into a nipple, or the sharing of tissue from the opposite nipple-areolar region. Additional techniques such as tattooing may be used to add color to the tissue if needed.
The primary benefit of nipple reconstruction is that you will regain your femininity and confidence by restoring your reconstructed breast to the look of your original breast. You also will not need to use nipple prosthetics to give yourself the natural female contours.
An ideal patient is typically a patient who has undergone breast reconstruction about 3 to 4 months prior and the breast has healed.
You should not make a quick decision about having nipple reconstruction. Dr. Castellon is a resource of knowledge and support that helps you decide what is best for you. Throughout the process, he demonstrates compassion, kindness, and patience, which are only part of his exceptional bedside manner.
Your nipple reconstruction is performed in the office. During the procedure, a flap of tissue is elevated on the breast and arranged to create the appearance of the nipple bud. You will feel comfortable throughout the procedure.
The procedure may take up to an hour in the office, but depends on the method used to reconstruct the nipple bud. Dr. Castellon will explain the length of your nipple reconstruction during the consultation appointment.
NIPPLE RECONSTRUCTION Consultation
Now that you have won the battle with breast cancer, you are ready to restore your breasts. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mauricio J. Castellon, of Castellon Plastic Surgery Center, offers breast reconstruction for women who live in Melbourne, Brevard County and the surrounding communities of Central Florida. Contact us today to schedule your personal consultation.
Healing from nipple reconstruction takes some time. Stitches are taken about 2 weeks following your procedure, and your nipple will protrude outward more in the beginning, but when it is healed, the nipple bud will flatten out to appear more natural to your breast. Ideally, nipple and areola reconstruction tries to match the position, size, shape, texture, color, and projection of the new nipple to the original one. If a woman wants to match the color of the nipple and areola of the other breast, tattooing may be done a few months after the surgery.
Nipple reconstruction is covered by medical insurance. After your consultation, we will provide information on your out-of-pocket costs. Castellon Plastic Surgery Center accepts payment by cash and check as well as credit card, including MasterCard®, American Express®, Discover® and Visa®. If you are interested in financing the cost of your breast reconstruction, we encourage you to apply with CareCredit® and LendingUSA.com.
